It all began in 1997, with Kim balancing three sons under three while tackling a business degree. For her final assignment – a full business plan – her lecturer suggested the tired old coffee-shop concept, but Kim knew that wasn’t her passion. Instead, she chose something that truly moved her: dance. It wasn’t about launching a school; it was simply an assignment. But as she mapped out her SWOT analysis, an unexpected spark ignited – what if this plan could actually work?
Just days later, that spark caught flame. A friend rang, asking Kim to set up a boys’ dance class at the local church hall in Mitcham. With no grand expectations, she turned up – and found herself teaching nine eager boys their first steps. Energised by the experience, Kim placed an ad in the local paper, seeking talented kids hungry for a performance team. The response was overwhelming. Talent Company was born – the very first dance-only performance team under Kim’s direction.

Kim Grant-Taylor is the founder and director of the Australian Company of Performing Arts, established over 25 years ago.
As the numbers grew, Kim realised that dance alone wasn’t enough: to give her students a truly rounded performance experience, she brought in a singing teacher, then added acting and other performance modules. Talent Company quickly became more than a passion project; it was a local phenomenon. From small church-hall showcases to TV ads, commercials, and network appearances, the team’s reputation exploded. More teachers joined, more classes were added, and before long, the Australian Company of Performing Arts – ACPA – was officially established.
Over the years, ACPA has called many studios “home,” expanding from those early group classes to now delivering over 90 sessions each week across multiple locations. But Kim’s vision didn’t stop at recreational dance. In 2007, she bridged the gap between amateur and professional by launching a Certificate IV in Dance – what we now proudly call “the Academy.” Catering to years 10–12 and pre-professional performers, the Academy has become a launching pad for South Australia’s brightest talent.
Through every change – new teachers, fresh studios, evolving programs – Kim’s passion has remained constant: to build genuine careers from the art she loves. Today, ACPA is a vibrant community, home to some of South Australia’s finest performers, educators, and dreamers. What started as a university assignment and a handful of boys in a church hall has grown into a legacy of creativity, professionalism, and unshakeable love for dance.
